According to Albert Einstein there are only two ways to live our life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. This is, for many of us, a novel idea.
In many ways, we live in a culture that encourages us to live as though nothing is a miracle. To a greater or less extent most adults are living woeful lives, so far below the possible level of our true potential, and suffering as a consequence. When we live as though nothing is a miracle, we exist in the world without making our contribution, without using even the most minute fraction of our abilities, without discovering all that is truly possible for us to be, do have, create and generate. To realize that there is this unconscious force operating in our lives, that is a down-dragging, restrictive current running counter to all the possibilities of generative growth in our lives, is the first step in living our life as though everything is a miracle.
It is possible to get back the energy that is now going into living life as though nothing is a miracle and use it to generate new and different possibilities. Of course, living life as though everything is a miracle is a choice. The responsibility is ours to create a new playing field. Complete honesty with ourselves is all that is necessary to discover whether we have been victim to an anti-conscious force that encourages us to live as though nothing is a miracle.
When people talk about a miracle, they often mean an event that is not ‘normal’ – that is, one that should not be able to happen according to the laws of nature. Contrary to what a lot of people think, a miracle is not about metaphysical or supernatural or magical power. It's certainly not relying on the will of God and it's not about getting everything we want when we want it. It’s not about spells, rituals, and tricks. It is not pie in the sky, or wishful thinking, or trying to distort the reality into something other than what it is. ..... So, what is it like to live life as though everything is a miracle?
Living as if everything is a miracle is a state of mind and it begins with an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude can transform humdrum days into a miracle, turn tedious jobs into joy, and change run-of-the-mill opportunities into blessings. To live as if everything is a miracle, we must develop an attitude of gratitude, and be grateful for everything that occurs in our life, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something new, different possibilities that are greater than our current situation.
One of the best things we can do throughout the day is to begin to recognize and celebrate life's small pleasures. We can learn to enjoy the seemingly insignificant blessings that we often overlook...little things like getting dressed, driving to work, cleaning our home, going to the grocery store, sending emails, and hundreds of other routine activities of life. Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.
The reality is that every one of us can consciously take control of our attitude and actively notice and acknowledge the good we have in our life. Whether or not these attitudes come to us naturally, taking a moment to focus on things we are grateful for in life can train us to see more and more of them, which will help us learn to be more grateful.
What if living life as though everything is a miracle is actually much easier than you’ve ever imagined? What if just a few minutes of being grateful for everything that occurs in our life could create that space of miracle?
